Opening date for new ‘Dust Bowl’ rest area revealed

Truckies will be able to use the new permanent “Dust Bowl” rest area on the northbound section of the Hume Highway at Menangle, NSW, from Friday, December 19.

To be officially known as the Menangle Truck Parking Bay, this new facility is opposite to the Partridge VC Rest Area site.

This new rest area has been designated for heavy vehicles only and has been designed to accommodate Oversize Overmass (OSOM) vehicles up to 125m long and 8m wide.

The site features a 300 metre deceleration lane, a 575 metre acceleration lane and a 5000 square metre parking area which is comparable to the former Dust Bowl that was closed in early 2024 to make way for Stage 1 of the Spring Farm Parkway connection.

“While these OSOM vehicles vary significantly in size, we anticipate anywhere up to seven vehicles may be able to park here at one time,” said Transport for NSW (TfNSW) in a statement announcing the opening.

In response to industry feedback, toilet facilities will be made available at the Menangle Truck Parking Bay by early 2026, TfNSW added.

The new site will also replace a temporary facility at Moolgun Creek.
