Spectacular display of chrome, colour and Christmas spirit

Saturday, December 13, saw a very successful “Tassie Convoy 4 Kids” convoy of approximately 120 trucks set out from Goodwood to Kempton via the Brooker Highway and Brighton.

This spectacular display of chrome, colour and community generosity at Christmas time, was well organised by Emma Bygrave and her convoy committee, and was a major fundraiser for the purchase of needed equipment and the support of sick children in the Royal Hobart Hospital and their families.

It has now become an annual event seeing hundreds of trucks and vehicles roll through Hobart adorned in festive decorations.

The convoy this year was led by “Santa” handing out lollies to the kids along the way from a Ford Ranger Ute kindly provided by Tilford’s Ford.

The team from Platinum Earthmoving turned out in force.

The dazzling display departed at 4pm from Goodwood and headed the top 10 money raising trucks which separately drove into the city centre and past the RHH Children’s Ward allowing the children to watch from the windows.

Rejoining the main convoy, they then left at 5pm and headed along the Brooker Highway and up to the Oval at Kempton via Brighton.

Here many of the drivers stayed overnight with their rigs and a great atmosphere prevailed with a lot of socialising and reminiscing, as well as some top entertainment from David Hawkins.

The eye-catching Quinn Transport and Spreading fleet was a firm fan favourite with the big crowd watching.

All in all this year’s convoy was a great success and all credit has to go to the organising committee. Not only was this a great fund-raising exercise, but it also gave the many people gathered along the Brooker Highway and along the way, a glimpse of the Tasmanian Road Transport community show casing not only their immaculately detailed trucks, but also their big hearts.

The top 10 trucks alone – see below – have raised $12,091 for the children’s ward.

Always a crowd-pleaser on these big days, Dave and Carl Wagner’s ‘Wagner Express’, a 1984 Mack Super-Liner.
