A section of the Eastern Freeway will be closed in both directions from tonight, with extreme delays of up to 90 minutes expected.
The freeway will be closed between Doncaster Road and Middleborough Road from tonight, 10pm Wednesday January 7 to 5am Monday January 12.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and plan an alternative route if possible.
For those heading citybound, the detour is via Wetherby Road and Doncaster Road. For those heading to the east, the detour is via Doncaster Road and Wetherby Road.
There will also be ramp closures at the Doncaster Road and Bulleen Road citybound exit ramp, the Chandler Highway and Thompsons Road Ringwood-bound entry ramp, and the Springvale Road and Blackburn Road citybound entry ramp.
Heavy congestion is also expected on surrounding roads in Bulleen, Templestowe Lower, Doncaster, Doncaster East, Box Hill North and Blackburn North during peak times.
During the freeway closure, crews will be working over the freeway lanes to remove the old Doncaster Road bridge and install high-voltage cables under the freeway.
