The drivers of a B-double and car have been tragically killed after a collision in northern NSW overnight.
Emergency services were called to the Newell Highway, south of Narrabri, at about 1.15am this morning (January 23) after reports a car and truck had collided before catching alight.
Both vehicles were destroyed and the drivers of the car and truck, both died at the scene. They are yet to be formally identified.
NSW Police said the blaze reportedly spread to nearby forest but has since been extinguished.
A crime scene was established with all lanes of the Newell Highway now closed in both directions. Motorists are advised to avoid the area with ongoing investigations expected to take some time.
Diversions are in place on Kamilaroi and Oxley Highways for all vehicles, northbound and southbound, and will add less than one hour to travel time.
Unless specified otherwise, operators of Class 1,2 and 3 vehicles travelling under a Notice must consult their relevant enforceable network map to confirm a suitable approved alternative route.
Operators of Class 1, 2 and 3 vehicles travelling under a Permit must not travel off the approved route listed in the permit unless an updated permit is obtained from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
