Major highway cut off as northern WA hit by heavy rains

The Great Northern Highway remains closed between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek due to rising flood levels at the Blue Bush floodway, to the east of Fitzroy Crossing.

Main Roads WA has warned that with river levels still peaking, it is expected to be closed until at least Wednesday.

“Various other floodways across the region, including Broome Highway are experiencing water over the road,” Main Roads WA said in an alert shared to social media.

“Closure signage is in place. Please exercise caution when travelling through the area and pay attention to traffic management.”

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has this morning issued a severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall in the Kimberley, Pilbara and North Interior.

In the alert, issued at 7.34am (WST), BOM said, “Severe showers and thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.”
