An Isuzu truck heading down southbound in the northbound lanes of the Bruce Highway at Burpengary, Queensland, has left one man dead and another fighting for life.
Police were called to the Bruce shortly after 10.30pm following reports a number of vehicles had been seen travelling southbound in the northbound lanes. Several people on social media reported the truck was being pursued by four-wheel-drives.
One of the vehicles travelling southbound, a white Isuzu truck, collided with a white Honda Accord travelling northbound.
The driver of the Honda, a 26-year-old Redcliffe man, sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. He was not involved in the chase, just heading in the right direction when caught in the path of the vehicles heading down the wrong lane.
The driver of the Isuzu sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.
Police declared a crime scene after receiving multiple reports that the truck was being chased by two other vehicles, which they are still looking for.
“They were going southbound in the northbound lane,’’ a police spokesman said.
Police said the truck was not stolen, as had been reported on social media.
The highway was reopened at 5.40am, about seven hours after the crash.
Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage at the time to contact them.
