Young truckie Riley Romer was driving a Kenworth for Mal’s Haulage out of Ipswich when Big Rigs saw him parked up at the Townsville Port Access Road breakdown pad.
Riley, 25, is in the younger bracket of drivers and was amazed when I told him the average age is around 58.
“I have been a truckie for about a year and like it. For this trip I have a demountable building from Brisbane for Townsville,” he said.
Before becoming a driver, Riley was a fitter and mechanic, which holds him in good stead for this job.
Riley said he likes the BP Cluden Roadhouse when in the area and added that they serve up a delicious pork and gravy roll around lunchtime.
Regarding rest areas, Riley believes there is enough for truckies on inland roads.
“But that is not the case on coastal highways,” he said.
A Brisbane Broncos supporter in the NRL, Riley loves camping when he gets time off.
“I go to Fraser Island and have never had a problem with dingoes. If you leave them alone, they tend to not bother you. The problem is when people feed them,” he added.
Riley hopes to be in the industry for many more years.

how do I word this…. back in January I got HC licence by doing a tile course, car to HC. since then ive applied for jobs after jobs etc. I did my final test in unrestricted crash box an pass with high score. but im still unable to find anyone willing to give me a chance at driving, back 1990 I got my forklift ticket at 19yrs old an start my career in transport an distribution. I live in mid north of south Australia, so there plenty of trucks out here.. I dont want this comment can do but its hard seeing all these rigs an me not driving. thank you taking your time to read my rant.. cheers an keep trucking
