Converting water into cheaper fuel bills with H2Boost

If you could take water, run it through a process to create hydrogen gas, add it to your engine’s air intake and noticeably improve the kilometres travelled per tank of diesel fuel, would you do it?

In a world where carbon reduction and zero emission transport is becoming the ultimate goal, H2Boost is offering transport operators a product and service that moves the profit dial in the right direction, without the costly outlay of buying an electric truck.

The product is a retrofit hydrogen on demand unit, easily added to existing trucks, that uses advanced electrolysis technology to convert demineralised water to hydrogen.

The hydrogen created is then added to the air fuel mix to create a cleaner and more efficient combustion process.

H2Boost General Manager Roger van der Lee said it could take as little as a half a day to install the converter where a suitable mounting location was available on the truck, or a prefabricated bracket had been created in advance.

“The mechanical requirement is to mount the unit (8 bolts), run the hydrogen gas line to the air intake tube and install the supply nozzle,” Roger said.

“This requires the removal of a section of air intake tube just before the turbo, which is usually a rubber elbow, fixing the nozzle in the tube wall and reinstating the elbow.

“The electrical requirement is route power cables to the battery, a switch activation line to the oil pressure gauge and a line to the engine CAN bus. This must be done by a qualified auto electrician.”

As the usage rate for demineralised water is typically one litre for every 30 hours of operation, refills are infrequent depending on the tank size chosen.

Roger said while the electrolysis process has been used in heavy industry for many decades, technical advances including the elimination of chemical catalysts, state of the art electronics and remote data capture meant H2Boost product was now able to offer a cutting-edge product to market in a more affordable, full-service, lease model designed for transport operators.

“We are offering a no risk opportunity to fleets to add to their profit through reduced fuel usage and longer service intervals,” he said.

“The cost of the fully maintained lease is designed to be less than the operational cost savings gained”.

“Businesses get a carbon emissions reduction solution to promote against their ESG responsibility, and the solution is funded from the opex budget, so no capex is required.”

While data from the new H2Boost products is still being collated, Roger said anecdotal information and feedback from early adopters of electrolysis technology indicated fuel savings of between 8 and 17 per cent are achievable.

He said independent testing of similar systems in the market had found the addition of hydrogen to the fuel mix has created large reductions in DPM (Diesel Particulate Matter) and soot residue in the engine oil.

The reduction in DPM reduces the load on the truck’s SCR exhaust systems, with the potential to reduce AdBlue usage.

H2Boost realises seeing is believing and is offering a free trial to fleets keen to understand how the technology could help their business.

“We are offering a no risk, no cost trial (other than cost retrieval for the installation),” Roger said.

“If the unit does not deliver on the agreed objective for the trial, we remove it.”

“Results would be achieved within two months – or less if the operator has accumulated historical data which can be responsibly compared to data recorded with the H2Boost unit fitted.”
