Terry Patten, from Newcastle, NSW, is a driver with 30 years of experience behind the wheel and a genuine appreciation for the career that’s kept him on the road for three decades.
Terry currently drives for Australia Post, transporting mail and parcels across NSW and beyond.
Over the years he’s worked in a variety of transport roles within the organisation, building a career that has seen him spend the last 20 years operating B-doubles.
His journey into trucking came through what he describes as a natural progression within Australia Post.
“Working for Australia Post there are various roles and pathways. I’ve worked in many different areas of transport within the corporation over the years.”
Today, Terry drives a Volvo, running routes including Newcastle to Sydney, Newcastle to Tamworth, Newcastle to Kempsey, and Newcastle to Coffs Harbour.
When asked about his current role, Terry doesn’t hesitate.
“It’s the easiest driving gig you can get.”
He speaks highly of both the equipment and conditions provided by Australia Post.
“The Volvos are comfortable, our gear is good and the conditions are great.”
After 30 years with the company, it’s clear Terry still enjoys coming to work each day and values the environment Australia Post has created for its drivers.
One thing that stands out is the pride he takes in the job and the company. In fact, Terry recently helped his niece get started within Auspost, continuing a tradition of introducing family members to an industry that’s given him a rewarding career.
When asked what he enjoys most about trucking, the answer is one many drivers can relate to.
“Just being on the road driving alone, listening to whatever I want. It’s the freedom.”
Like every trucking job, there are still challenges.
However, Terry is quick to point out that drivers at Australia Post aren’t under the pressure that many operators face.
“We aren’t pushed. Our trip times are very cruisy.”
In an industry where deadlines and unrealistic schedules can often create stress, having achievable run times is something Terry greatly appreciates.
Away from work, Terry describes himself as a simple family man. He enjoys four-wheel driving, camping, spending time with his wife, kids and dogs, catching the footy and sharing a cold beer with mates.
After three decades in transport, what keeps him coming back is simple, a good workplace, quality equipment and a genuine love for being out on the road.
