Main Roads WA has announced the opening of a new southbound heavy vehicle parking bay near Albany.
The new site on Chester Pass Road at Stirling Range Drive is opposite an existing bay and offers a sealed rest area, infrastructure for future toilet facilities, improved drainage, and upgraded signage, guideposts and line marking.
The project stemmed from a Main Roads WA proposal announced earlier this year, which identified the corridor as lacking suitable truck stopping opportunities for southbound freight traffic
In the initial site assessment report, Main Roads said the current road network was deficient in truck stopping bays for south-bound traffic on Albany-Lake Grace Road heading toward Albany.
Chester Pass Road, is a single-carriageway, sealed road that serves as a vital heavy haulage route connecting northern communities such as Borden, Ongerup, Nyabing, Pingrup, and Lake Grace to Albany, accommodating tourist traffic, freight, and grain transport.
This road also runs through the Stirling Range National Park, providing access to popular tourist attractions such as Bluff Knoll and Toolbrunup Peak.
The new bay required the clearing of 0.37 ha of remnant roadside native vegetation within a 0.6 ha development envelope.
