Transport operators using Performance Based Standards (PBS) vehicles in New South Wales are being advised of an important speed limit change affecting combinations over 26 metres operating under permit.
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) says that from July 1, 2026, new PBS permits issued for eligible vehicles will no longer include the previous 90km/h speed restriction.
The update follows changes made by Transport for NSW and applies to PBS vehicles longer than 26 metres that operate under an access permit.
According to the NHVR, operators receiving new permits from July 1 onwards will notice the 90km/h condition has been removed from their permit documents.
However, the regulator stressed that existing permits issued before July 1 will continue to carry the 90km/h restriction until they are amended or replaced.
Operators wanting the condition removed from an existing permit will need to apply for a permit amendment through the NHVR.
The NHVR also reminded industry that all other permit conditions remain in force and drivers must continue to comply with posted speed limits, road rules and any specific conditions attached to their permits.
The change aligns permitted PBS vehicles over 26 metres with the general heavy vehicle speed limit arrangements in New South Wales and is expected to simplify permit conditions for many operators.
The regulator is encouraging affected operators to review their current permits and determine whether an amendment is required before assuming the updated speed limit arrangements apply.
