Mental health messages from industry support groups

Health in Gear, the recently-launched owner-drivers’ free health and wellness support group, has sent a timely reminder to truckies that help is only ever a phone call away.

In the same week that Lifeline logged a record number of daily calls, Health in Gear CEO Darren Black said he recognises the hardships drivers are facing with the growing Covid crisis.

“Border closures, constant testing, isolation, and disruptions add to the many challenges of the transport industry and the uncertainty of the situation may lead to feelings of worry, frustration, and concern,” said Black.

“We want to remind you that if you need support, we are here. You can speak to one of our wellbeing support members or a counsellor by calling 1800 464 327 (Mon–Fri, 9 am–5pm).”

Black also reminded truckies that the website provides resources to help stay well, maintain good routines and find additional supports.

“You can also listen to our podcast, Share The Load which might be a great way to switch off and listen to some stories from the road.

“Our nation would stop without the transport industry and we feel incredibly grateful for the driver community and their continued hard work, even during the toughest of times.

“Please stay safe and look after yourself. From the entire team at OzHelp’s Health In Gear program we are greatly appreciative of the work you do and the important role you play within the community.”

Meanwhile, Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds, the industry’s over-arching not-for-profit foundation in this space, has just launched a $60 (+GST) online course to help truckies and others in the transport industry to “understand and manage their mental health and wellbeing”.

“Industry-specific components of the course focus on managing close relationships for better mental health when away from home, and developing small daily habits for a healthy lifestyle around the core principles of wellness,” said the website.

Both Health in Gear and Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds are funded by the NHVR-administered Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative to the tune of $250,00 and $750,000, respectively.
